BREAKOUT SESSION #1 - CHOOSE ONE - 12:00 - 1:15pm

Transition and change; how do you start-up the business of you? Most of us enjoy the fantasy that a personal Rome could be built in a day; at 50+ we know the truth is different. There’s no good start to fulfillment without understanding ourselves in the midst of change, and how we can use the time between endings and beginnings…the “neutral zone”…to uncover information that will help us make better choices for better outcomes. It’s time. In this session we’ll focus on change and transition along with the skills, qualities, and tools that can help you change how you think about gathering, organizing, and prioritizing the data of your life. Dusting off your experience can tell you a lot more than you know about what you value and derive energy from. The time for thinking differently is now. And the time for truly knowing who you are and what you value, [and learning how to use that knowledge to create meaningful change and success] is now.
How do you start a profitable one-person operation? If you are interested in begin a successful career consulting or in other one-person operations such as direct selling with companies like Pampered Chef, Silpada, Tupperware, and Avon, this breakout session will be of interest to you. These one-person operations present opportunities to make a substantial living without the start-up costs and resource committment of some other ventures. This session will present various opportunites that exist in this area, will cover how to evaluate such opportunities and will give instruction on how to make your goal a reality. In this session, you will hear from an entrepreneur who left the corporate world and now runs a thriving consultancy, along with a direct selling entrepreneur and a university professor. Each will talk through various opportunites that exist in this area, how to evaluate such opportunities and and make your goal a reality.
Where can you obtain financing and should you risk your own money? In this breakout, you will learn what financial sources are available to entrepreneurs including bank loans and private investors, and what each source would require from you. This session will also cover what issues must be addressed in determining how much, if any, of your personal savings you should use as well as considerations surrounding borrowing money from friends and family. This session will also give an overview of alternative funding sources such as savings accounts, retirement funds, and reverse mortgages. Finally, you will learn how to estimate the level of financial risk associated with starting or buying a business.
So you want to be a social entrepreneur? If what you are looking for is to start a venture where the bottom line is measured in the common good, then this breakout session will be of interest to you. Just as with business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs see a need for a service, form an organization, seek financing, and aim for an expanding venture that can help to support and perpetuate itself. But somewhat differently, this class of entrepreneur measures success in terms of impact on society. In this session, you will learn about various types of organizations you can form to tackle major social issues, unique funding sources for your venture and different methods used to inspire wide-scale change. You will also hear about resources and networking organizations for like-minded individuals.
BREAKOUT SESSION #2 - CHOOSE ONE - 3:15 - 4:30pm
Will your idea work? Choosing a viable idea: How do you spot a business opportunity or should you create one based on your own skills and interests? How do you determine if there is a market for your business idea and, if so, who are your competitors? How much market research is required to move your idea from shot-in-the-dark to researched, calculated risk? Can your concept make money? What are the benefits of writing a business plan? How do you determine if your new business idea suits your lifestyle needs, natural abilities and professional experience?

What business (or life) fits you? And how do you fit (in) the business? The story of who you are and what you’re looking for is one that most people want to know (if not, we wouldn’t read novels). You can craft your story and use it in your quest with “Search Plan Summaries”(SPS) and Info-working (specialized open networking to learn about what you might want to do, how it’s done, and to grow your contacts in that area.) This workshop will start with a brief overview of how to uncover and organize self knowledge (see The Business of YOU), but will work primarily to help you change your thinking about—and give you some tools for—presenting yourself and getting whatever you need to investigate, learn about, or establish a new business…or anything. Eyes-open change makes for much smarter results than dumb luck.
Should you start an Internet company? Low startup costs and the ability to work from anywhere are only two of the many reasons Internet businesses are becoming more attractive to entrepreneurs of all ages. This breakout session will address the pros and cons of Internet businesses, the logistics of setting up shop as well as how to manage online security issues.
